| To Photograph is to see.
To be visually aware. To hear what we are seeing. To combine that awareness... Awareness of the light, awareness of the surroundings, constructing the composition within our minds, Capturing reality. Working in time ... chasing time ... watching time ... and capturing time. Creating the components of that single image rarely comes easy. A myriad of possibilites are then placed on the photographers palet to bring that captured moment back from a negative to a positive image. The infinite choices from selecting film type, chemicals, processes, papers ... the craft of then painting by light, by exposing the negative image onto sensitized paper ... painstaking at times, to achieve that final printed image. The Print is the vehicle which displays the creativity of the photographers visualisation. Creating intimate studies that I hope draw the viewer into the complex textures and contrasts of nature that only photography is capable of detailing. These studies contrast with my large-scale mural prints, up to 8’x4’ capturing the “sense of space” and grandeur of the landscape around us. Interpretations which invite the onlooker to engage personally with each image and experience the clarity and scale of each captured moment, challenging our emotional response and appreciation of the world around us. In keeping pace with technology I have adapted to what I believe is the ultimate in print quality. I am off the opinion that photography is ' light ' on paper, not ink on paper. I prefer the look, feel and quality of a traditional Silver Rich Gelatin Photographic Print. This printing is a time served process where the archival permanance has been proven since its introduction in 1870 - unlike pigment or ink based printing.
Image is everything, and the print is the canvas by which photographers exhibit their art. Photography is in a profound state of change in relation to digital imaging, the biggest change since its discovery. The consequence being that new processes and materials are constantly being developed, in addition to advances in digital manipulation. No longer is a 'photograph a photograph'...there are now a variety of printing processes available. I have gone full circle and have come back to time served traditional printing, however I also welcome the new technologies and employ them in a way which enhances that traditional printing. Image is everything, which is why I dont print to limited editions. It is the image which is the worth not the number of prints available. The iconic image Moonrise at Hernandez by Ansel Adams is one of his most popular images. Throughout his lifetime he produced 1400 original prints of this image, confirming the fact that the image is the worth. Photography is by its very nature a reproducable art. A photographic image is unique and each photographic print when hand crafted is also a unique original print. That is the beauty of Photography which needs to be understood. No other art has this ability. The aesthetic variation, in conjunction with processing and printing material variances makes each print a distinctly original creation. All Silver Gelatin Photographic Art Prints receive archival processing from start to finish, including treatment in Selenium Toner for maximum image stability. If properly cared for by it's owner, will last for well over 150 years without visible loss of quality. Each crafted print is signed on the print mount itself, not the print, as the print is dry mounted on archival board. As a guide - The Silver Gelatin Prints start at £ 350 for an 8" x 12" mounted and unframed print (£495 framed) up to a print size of 4 feet a 3 feet at £ 1845 Framed. All frames are premium quality museum grade frames incorporating TruVue glass. Mural Prints are supplied in a presentation unglazed frame and start at £ 2345 for a 5 feet x 4 feet print, and up to £ 3645 for a 8 feet x 4 feet print.
